What prompted you to choose a career in funeral service?

My studies in sociology at Georgia State University played a big role in my decision to pursue a career in funeral service. I’ve always wanted a career where I can help people through difficult times, and I realized everyone experiences loss, and funeral directors will always be needed to help. Furthermore, my family has owned a funeral home in Baltimore for over a 100 years, and I feel it is important for me to continue to serve our community and families.

In your own words, why do you think you will be a good funeral director?

I think I’ll be a good funeral director because I enjoy being around people, getting to know people, and helping out in any way I can.

What do you want people outside of the profession to understand about funeral service?

I want people to know that - generally speaking - funeral homes and funeral directors are not creepy or predatory and that funeral service only exists to help people remember their loved ones with respect and care.

What advice would you give someone just starting mortuary science school?

I would tell anyone starting mortuary school not to get discouraged by people telling you how much work the job is! There are so many careers that require long hours of hard work, and there are lots of people in this industry who will genuinely want to help you along the way. Remember why you’re doing this!

How do you like to spend your free time?

When I’m not studying or working, I’m at trivia, shopping, doing crosswords, reading, or exploring other neighborhoods in the City.
