FTC Releases Report: Staff Review of Consumer Experience

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is in the midst of their review of the Funeral Industry Practices Rule, better known as the “Funeral Rule.” This is the national regulation that requires funeral homes to provide consumers with a General Price List (GPL) for all the goods and services that they regularly offer to the public.

Last month the FTC released a Disclosure Review, showing spotty compliance amongst funeral homes nationwide. Our partners at the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association shared their summary of the Review.

As NJSFDA states: The report on the FTC review does not draw conclusions about the state of pricing disclosure within the industry, but it does point to the need for funeral directors to be vigilant about complying with the disclosure mandate. Providing complete information as quickly as possible is a must, and the FTC does not seem to consider after-hours calls an excuse for not meeting the disclosure mandate.

NYSFDA will continue to keep you informed, and we encourage you to always have your General Price List readily available so you’re able to provide complete and accurate information whenever and however necessary.
