New York State Funeral Directors Association

Jeff Jennings CFSP

Well, here we are in February already. This past month of “old man winter” seems to have gone by fast.  The days are getting a little longer and the temperature is rising. Spring is on its way!!!

The Association remains busy working for you - OUR MEMBERS. The Bridge Commission met in January and planned the 2nd annual Student Day at Association Office on Saturday, April 4th.  This is a great day of learning and networking for students and residents, our future licensees.  It enables them to see and experience different aspects of Funeral Service as well as an opportunity to learn about NYSFDA. Who knows, maybe they’ll be our future members and leaders???

This month we are holding our first meeting with the Task Force on Chapter Models, for the Local and State Associations. Again, another opportunity for “a meeting of the minds” to explore the possibilities of restructuring the Local/State Associations. This topic will also be discussed at our Regional Meetings, so I encourage you all to attend.  This, as well as the other topics of interest that I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, could possibly change the face of Funeral Service in New York State. Dates and locations will be announced as soon as finalized.

Another very important issue to share is the introduction of a new bill in both the State Assembly and Senate seeking a PERMANENT BAN on pre-need insurance in New York State. Though our current ban does not expire (sunset) until 2022, we felt the timing was right to move on this issue now. This has always been our #1 legislative priority and at the core of Association concerns since the 1930s. As we proceed with this bill, we’ll keep you informed and updated on any developments and reach out to you to contact your State Representatives if necessary. Strength in numbers and unity!!! Please feel free to contact myself, my fellow officers or the Association if you have any concerns about the Association and its happenings. Remember, this is YOUR STATE ASSOCIATION.

In closing I would like to remind you to renew your dues. If you have done so already, THANK YOU and if you haven’t, please consider doing so. As you can see, membership has its privileges and I feel no other organization can offer you as much as our staff and leadership do. We are always working and looking out for you - THE MEMBERS, so please renew, it’s a great investment. “To enhance the environment in which our members operate and to promote to the public the highest standards of Funeral Service”. I feel that says it all!

’Til next month!
